10. Misa – Deathnote

Her loyalty and love for Light was both her strong point and weakness. Something felt very tragic about her character.

What the hell… Is going on?

Based from the popular manga Prison School, JC Staff has started adapting the beginning into an anime. While there are a few quirks here and there, for the most part the anime captures the humour and misadventures of our male protagonists amenably. Censoring is prevalent but I expect the blu ray version will come with an uncut version for those who enjoy there ecchi.

prison-school_splash-672x372

The story starts as a group of five male adolescents are caught peeking at the female populace in there changing rooms. Unlike normal schools, this one has a unique set of rules. Instead of being suspended our cast of males are given the choice to be sentenced to a prison school.

The female staff who facilitate this program have sadistic tendencies, making up much of the ecchi and humour prevalent in the story. However the real excitement comes from the plans and schemes carried out by our unfortunate gang of prisoners. It builds up high tension moments and flourishes with awkward encounters. It’s often hilarious to see the different situations they come up with. Whether its using your friends hair as a wig or pining the rest of your high school life on a figurine, it masterfully captures these moments in crude, comedic fashion.

The art and animation are decent. The over the top expressions are particularly notable. Likewise the OST does a good job with fitting the scenes without being exemplarily. The censorship is done by light filters, so while it sometimes feels awkward, the censorship is never to excessive.

It’s silly but not nonsensical. The crude humour might not make you laugh out loud but the gang of delinquents and their misadventures will even give the most stony faced veterans a running for a smile.

Aww, man, This is awkward. How can I kill a lady?

The name “Gangsta” might give the impression that this is an anime about gangsters, double dealing and turf wars. While it does incorporate some of these themes, it does so in a dystopian world which has so far done a good job with piquing interest about the ins and outs of how life is lived. Our two main characters, Worick and Nicholas are handyman; they take odd jobs from anyone, which includes the police force. They live in a place governed by the three laws, one of these laws is broken by an outside entity. We don’t know why or what these outsiders are after but this so far has been at the forefront of the story. The first few episodes mostly introduced us to the world and the characters.

Worick is easy going with a naturally mischievous attitude. He has sharp eyes for shooting and has a side job with being a lady pleaser. You can tell that he cares for Nicholas amidst his playful banter. Nicholas is a Twilight, which is a name given to the descendants who used Celebrer drug. They are noted have super human strength and speed but are often riddled with personality or physical disorders.

What Gangsta lacks so far in plot, it makes up in the technical departments. The art and animation are detailed and fluid. It does a great job at capturing the moment to moment action. The OST oozes with style making up for some of the well rounded fight scenes this year.

Gangsta has potential to be something great. As we see the story expanded further, only time will tell which way it pans out. Thus far it has been looking like its heading in a positive direction.
